what a difference a year makes

as i was going through photos for my earlier post, i discovered that i had taken a picture of the 2 wee ones on the same day of the year last year:

dear time,
please slow down!

"not a fan" is wrapped!!!

last saturday evening, "not a fan" wrapped! it was a great shoot from my humble perspective: the vibe on set was great, the people working on the project were really cool, and i think they have some really beautiful shots!

well, the night the dude was on, i forgot my camera...i know, i know...i'll NEVER make it as a true "stage-mom"! but really, i was busy and wouldn't have had a chance to get many great shots anyways. but here's a little behind the scenes footage of the dude: (if you've visited richie's blog, you've already seen it...but amuse me...and watch it again :) )

the dude did really well once he caught on. it took a few times for him to realize that we were doing the same thing over and over, and i did bribe him with some candy...hey, i'm not proud...but i'm sure Brando was fed skittles to get a few of his performances too! (uh..."Island of Dr. Moreau"?...yeah...needed more skittles!)
in the scene we shot, one of the characters collapses. the funny part was that the dude would watch the actor out of the corner of his eye and wait for him to fall...gotta work on that "acting is REacting" thing.
but overall he did really well for being up past his bedtime and high on sugar!
unfortunately, i don't think his "buzz lightyear" impersonation will make the final cut, licensing issues and all ;)

of course, the bug wanted to know when she was gonna get in on the action. so last saturday she had her chance:
"not a fan" downtown

she was an extra in a shot called a "walk and talk" (it is what it sounds like). she had a great time with her "extra buddy" Heidi (who also works at City on a Hill)!

there's my bug! check out that intensity...she walked very well :)

one of my favorite people on set: john the sound guy
i think his job would make me insane, and therefore i have much respect for sound people!

after the bug's work was done, we hung around to watch the next set up.
that's quite a blind spot!
the camera was actually mounted on the passenger side door, the director of photography and the director rode in the backseat watching a monitor, and there was a police escort to help keep it all under control.

while all the magic was getting ready to happen...
the dude had his first experience with splinters.

richie and i definitely earned a new "merit badge" later that evening when we had to pull another one out with a needle and tweezers. the operation went well: the splinter was removed successfully and the surgeons managed to recover from the wounds from that the dude's flailing limbs dished out.

i really cannot wait to see how this project turns out! i'll keep you posted on the "post" and some of the behind the scenes videos that will be coming out over the next few months while the series gets put together.

this week

this has been one of those weeks: lots of emotional ups and downs and a week where i'd just like to find my feet back on the ground.
***
i believe the "fall back" on the clock has reset our sleep schedules so it feels like we are a little bit more normal. the weather has been very pleasant and we have taken advantage a tried to get outside before the winter forces us in for a few months.
here are just a few highlights of our week:
the bug had her first violin lesson on thursday!
she was very excited to start, and i hope that excitement will continue. her violin is sooooo tiny! it feels like a toy when i hold it. but it's the perfect size for her, and she enjoys playing on it...now if i can just get her to practice what she's supposed to :)

richie and i had 2 very long days on the set of "not a fan" this weekend. the kids had great babysitters both days, but i was really happy to be home at night. friday night we had a family game of TROUBLE (which is trickier than it would appear) and smoothies!
BTW: after a "lightning speed" round...i TOTALLY whooped richie! (the bug had quit since the game was "taking to long")

and here is our newest mode of transportation:
our "new to us" Toyota Sienna!
i am very proud of richie for finding it for us, it'll sure make those long trips home a LOT more comfortable! (not to mention we won't have to coordinate who gets the car and on what day.)

i have 2 overnight shoots monday and tuesday of this coming week, and i'm hoping to take my camera to show you some behind the scenes stuff! but in the meantime, please check out richie's blog posts on "not a fan"!

gymnastics!

as some of you may already know, this year we decided to forgo dance classes and start gymnastics for both kids. i'm really glad we made the switch this year. for starters, i can watch the bug's class. in dance, i had to drop her off and only got to see her dance twice a semester. with gym, the dude's class is at the same time, and while i have to accompany him, i can still watch the bug when she's doing stuff! also, i can see progress with both of them! the bug is getting stronger and more coordinated, and the dude is too! but most importantly: THEY LOVE IT!!!

bug on the balance beam.

dude on trampoline, one of his favorites.

and his VERY favorite:
the trapeze!!!

she flys through the air with the greatest of ease...

i love trampoline pictures!
the hair is the best!

paper wings

as we were getting dressed for the traditional candy gathering, the dude decided he didn't want to be the tin man because he didn't want to take off his buzz lightyear shirt. so....
richie and i made the boy some wings!
it's not that we spoil our children by giving into their whims. as artists and actors who understand the importance of a costume, we just couldn't pass up the chance to up the ante!
all i can say is thank goodness for duct tape and self adhesive felt!
we made the wings with some boxes from the bug's birthday gifts, and attached them to a t-shirt that we pulled over a backpack! give us 15 minutes and we'll give you...
the real BUZZ!
the dude was totally stoked about his new costume!

so without further ado (i think we had enough "ado" for the evening)...
my little trick-or-treaters! (who clearly didn't drink their V8 that day.)

it was pretty chilly, so once again the wagon and blanket saved the night! the kids had fun and we filled our buckets with lots of goodies!

favorite quotes of the evening:
bug: "they are calling me Dorothy, because I LOOK like Dorothy!"
dude: " I BUSS LI YEE!!!" (translated: I'm Buzz Lightyear!)

they say it's your birthday!!!

WOO HOO!!! THE BUG IS 5!!!
if you'll just allow me a small moment to try and take in the idea that i've been a mamabalama for 5 years now....okay....a moment's not long enough! can i just say that no matter how fast people tell you your kids will grow up...it's never accurate...it's way faster! so after days and weeks of trying to convince the bug NOT to turn 5 (threatening to call the President and asking him to cancel the 31st, telling her that 5 does NOT come after 4, telling her i'm gonna let her sleep through her birthday so that she CAN'T turn 5, etc) the day arrived anyway and we decided to celebrate :)

in true 5 year old little girl fashion: barbie and stuffed animals were some of the bug's favorite gifts. that meant that most of the morning was spent trying to liberate the toys from their high security packaging...operation "free barbie dogs" was successful...press conference to follow.

while i was distracted by the millions of tiny barbie pieces...the dude stole my camera.
random dude picture: craisins

so after opening gifts, we headed out (new dogs in tow and new outfit on) to the bug's favorite restaurant:

LYNN'S PARADISE CAFE!!!! ever since we visited this summer with my mom, the bug has said that's where she wanted to eat on her birthday!
the birthday bug

the dude with his chocolate milk!

on a saturday morning, this place is busy! (glad i thought to make a reservation) and here is one reason people flock there:
chocolate chip french toast!
this is what the bug had been talking about for weeks! and it truly lived up to it's reputation!

the dude was mesmerized by the huge cappuccino maker!

oh, and the painted yard ornament collection!

bug and the elvis bear

this year's Christmas card pic.

the rest of the afternoon was spent playing with new toys and trying on new clothes. after trick or treating (pictures in the next post) we came back home to skype with our family back in TX!
it was pretty cool! they even got to sing happy birthday to the bug via cyberspace!
i heart skype!

here is the ice cream cake lovingly decorated by the dude and bug!

to my bug,

for 5 years you have been making me laugh! you're one of my favorite people in the whole world! i can only imagine what the next 5 years will hold for you!
i love you a million billion trillion!
